Former Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) didn't rule out running for public office again in an interview with Masslive.com Monday.

Flashback: The former "Saturday Night Live" star resigned from the Senate in 2017, after seven women accused him of sexual misconduct and more than 30 of his Democratic Senate colleagues called for his resignation.

What he's saying: "I’m keeping my options open, right now my focus is on doing this [tour] and doing other stuff that is more politically blatant," Franken said.

  • "Well, I wanted due process, but I had 36 colleagues and a majority leader who wouldn’t give it to me, so it was impossible. But you do have some regrets. It was a very weird, tough situation at that moment," he continued.
  • “I love the Senate. I love the work that I did."

Of note: Franken has returned to comedy and will begin a standup show starting on Sept. 18, per MassLive.

  • Prior to running for office, Franken worked for "SNL" for 10 years.

Senate will try passing short-term highway funding bill after GOP protest

The Senate will attempt to pass a 30-day, short-term extension of federal highway programs on Saturday after Republicans prevented the chamber from clearing the stopgap bill on Friday night.

Why it matters: Roughly 3,700 Transportation Department employees have been temporarily furloughed as a result of the roadblock, per Reuters. The deadline to reauthorize the programs expired at midnight on Thursday.

Senate Democrats join Biden to pivot Build Back Better strategy

A growing number of Senate Democrats are urging their colleagues to begin paring back the $1.75 trillion Build Back Better agenda to salvage what they can, abandoning hopes of the transformational to achieve the possible.

Why it matters: Democrats are desperate to notch a win. President Biden's popularity is sagging in the polls, the pandemic is raging and the party's record of passing crucial legislation has been muddled. Biden himself conceded during his news conference Wednesday that passing the parts was more likely than getting the whole.

Scoop: White House eyes vaccine mandate for migrants

The White House is considering requiring migrants aged 5 and older to receive a coronavirus vaccination as a condition for crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to await court hearings, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: The Biden administration has been offering the COVID-19 vaccine to people in immigration detention centers or shelters but hasn't yet offered it to other migrants who've crossed the border — much less required it.
