Republican Ashley Moody defeats Angie Nixon in Florida Senate race

• Democrats haven't won a Senate race in Florida since 2012, and Republicans outnumber Democrats by 1.5 million registered voters.
• Moody led 51% to 48%, with 97% of votes counted, according to AP.

Driving the news: Moody, Florida's former attorney general and a former judge, was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2025 after Marco Rubio became President Trump's secretary of state.

• Trump endorsed her, and she campaigned on supporting his "America First" agenda, including strengthening national security and promoting law and order.

Nixon, a Florida state representative, campaigned for a national rent freeze, a 5% annual wealth tax on billionaires, universal child care and abolishing ICE.

• She received endorsements from progressive Democrats, including Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

The intrigue: Nixon won a Democratic primary upset, defeating Alexander Vindman despite being heavily outraised.

• A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Nixon has distanced herself from the organization since winning her primary, saying she doesn't campaign "as a member of any organization."

What's next: Moody will serve the remainder of Rubio's six-year Senate term, which expires in January 2029.
