Socialism is on the march in President Trump's second term: At least five new democratic socialists officially won election to the House on Tuesday, according to AP projections.
Why it matters: Democratic socialists' growing ranks in Congress could be a headache for Hakeem Jeffries, as some have signaled that they're willing to play hardball to push for progressive policies.
Zoom in: Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier of New York; Chris Rabb of Pennsylvania; Melat Kiros of Colorado; and Donovan McKinney of Michigan are the democratic socialists on their way to Congress.
- Their victories in deep-blue districts were not a surprise.
- Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed was leading former Rep. Mike Rogers as of 11pm ET. He has said he is not a socialist, but his top surrogates — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.— are among the biggest socialist stars in the country.
- Angie Nixon, the Florida Senate nominee who joined the DSA but said that she is not a socialist, narrowly lost to incumbent Republican Ashley Moody.
By the numbers: A recent Gallup poll found 43% of Americans, and almost two-thirds of Democrats, have a positive view of socialism.
