Police, protesters clash in Paris as tens of thousands rally across France

State of play: Riot police fired tear gas during protests near Les Invalides in Paris and in the western French city of Nantes, though officials said most demonstrations passed peacefully.

• France's Interior Ministry put Tuesday's nationwide turnout at roughly 161,500, while unions estimated about 480,000 protesters.
• Among the protesters in the Paris area was Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who rose to worldwide prominence when she organized climate protests while still at school.
• "Young people are not being included in the conversation," Thunberg told reporters in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. "Our future is being stolen from us and, as we have seen here, schools are not getting the investment they need."

Between the lines: The unrest over education coincides with growing pressure on European governments to curb budget deficits, as higher borrowing costs add to their fiscal challenges.
