Effort to rebuke Trump over Iran war fails in Senate

The Senate failed to agree to a resolution calling for an end to the U.S. conflict in Iran on Thursday.

Why it matters: Despite Republicans increasingly speaking out against President Trump over the conflict — which has no end in sight and has sent gas prices spiking — the party held together to block the measure's passage.

Zoom in: The resolution, which passed the House in July with a vote of 214 to 208, failed in the Senate 49-50.

It is a largely symbolic measure.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) voted against the resolution, while Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) voted in favor.

Between the lines: Democrats have forced numerous votes on similar resolutions meant to rebuke Trump over the conflict in Iran.

Only one vote has been successful in the Senate, but the resolution failed on further procedural votes.

Zoom out: Republicans are increasingly pushing back against the war, especially those in competitive midterm races.

Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) introduced a resolution last week calling for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The effort was part of the reason the House broke early for recess.
Sen. Jon Husted (Ohio) as well as Senate candidates Rep. Ashley Hinson (Iowa) and former Rep. Mike Rogers (Mich.) have called for the war to end in recent days.
However, Husted, along with Sens. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Roger Marshall (R-Kans.) — who are all in competitive reelection races — voted against the measure Thursday.
