President Trump was inaudible during a press conference Monday after the TV pool suspended coverage, with White House-provided video carrying no usable audio of his remarks.
Why it matters: It's a remarkable and immediate ramification of Trump's attempt to limit pool access.
- The pool serves hundreds of journalists, so losing independent TV coverage can limit what the media — and the public — can see and hear.
Driving the news: President Trump announced a ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico on Friday, confiscating their credentials on Saturday over what he termed "FAKE NEWS".
- CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a lawsuit on Monday seeking to restore their access, arguing the ban violates the First Amendment.
- The decision to pull pooled TV coverage is a rare display of unified pushback from fiercely competitive networks against the administration's attempt to dictate what the public sees and how.

What the pool is
How it works: The White House press pool is a rotating group of journalists who stay by the president's side throughout his public appearances and share their reporting, audio and footage with the rest of the media.
- The pool includes about 20 journalists. They travel with Trump on Air Force One and cram into the Oval Office, providing updates.
- The TV coverage relies on five networks — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC — that take turns providing live footage.
What the pool does
The big picture: Trump is constantly on the move, so the pool makes it easier and less expensive to document his whereabouts.
- The pool documents details like when The Beast — Trump's armored car — arrives at a location.
- It also ensures coverage if the president needs to address the nation at a moment's notice
What they're saying: "So this isn't just DC insider access journalism," Seth Stern, chief of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, tells Axios.
- "If you're living in Wyoming or Arizona or Chicago, it's very likely that the White House news you're reading originates from the press pool."
Zoom in: "The president is a walking news story," Stern says.
- "[T]he press pool has been devalued by the president's conduct. The press pool is not getting honest and thoughtful insights from this president."
- "That being said, that's still newsworthy. The way this president behaves is a news story. The fact that the president, in the midst of war, is rambling on about vanity projects is newsworthy. The fact that the president keeps berating female reporters is newsworthy."
What the TV blackout means
Without a TV pool crew, there is little independent broadcast video of the president's restricted-access events.
- C-SPAN said it would not show Trump's White House helipad ribbon-cutting "because it relies on the TV pool and had no feed.
- The blackout has limits: The White House pool won't provide a camera for Trump's UN trip, but the UN is expected to broadcast General Assembly proceedings with its own cameras.
The bottom line: The TV pool gives the public an independent audiovisual record of presidential events that otherwise may be seen only through government-provided cameras.
