Sen. Chris Murphy introduces ICE bills to put GOP on defense

Driving the news: Murphy will introduce the bills Thursday afternoon. Each would bar Homeland Security officials or anyone acting under DHS authority from conducting immigration enforcement at:

1. A school bus stop for children
2. A childcare facility
3. A children's playground

The backdrop: A four-day immigration raid in southern Connecticut in late August led to 118 immigrant arrests, ICE has said.

• One of the arrests occurred near a school bus stop moments after children had boarded a bus, according to bus camera footage obtained by local outlet CT Insider.
• The operation was part of a broader summer surge in ICE arrests.

What he's saying: "The American people have seen horrifying videos of ICE agents terrorizing our streets and instilling fear in communities," Murphy said in a statement first provided to Axios.

• "These bills should be a no-brainer," he added. "Kids should be safe from violent enforcement–period–but especially on the playground, at daycare, and waiting for the bus."

Zoom out: Surveys show some of Trump's 2024 gains with Latino voters are slipping, and his handling of immigration is broadly unpopular.

• Even Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (Fla.) directly appealed to Trump over the crackdown in a new ad.
• "Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far," she says. "The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today."
