Anthropic debuts Claude Docs, raising stakes for Microsoft

Anthropic on Wednesday debuted Claude Docs, bringing Claude closer to everyday knowledge work and raising the stakes for Microsoft, whose venerable Office suite has weathered generations of competition.
Why it matters: The move shows how frontier labs continue to release products that compete with established software giants and startups alike, underscoring why some companies see them as a looming competitive threat.
- Anthropic's bet is that users shouldn't have to decide whether a task belongs in a chatbot, a project workspace or a document editor. They should be able to describe what they want and let Claude determine the right tools and format.
- The new tool facilitates collaborative document editing in its main tool, which also now integrates its chat with its Cowork tools. The features are coming first to Pro and Max subscribers over the coming weeks.
Context: Rival OpenAI has already merged Codex and ChatGPT into a single app, reflecting a broader industry push to make AI assistants more capable of handling both quick questions and complex, multistep work.
The big picture: Earlier this year, Anthropic's launches of certain plug-ins, including what became Claude Design, led to a prolonged selloff in the shares of a range of software companies as investors considered how labs might decide to compete for subscribers.
Zoom in: The new documents tool allows Claude to draft sections, ask questions, comment on editorial choices and revise the document. Colleagues can work in the same document at the same time.
- Documents start private, with owners able to share them with specific people or an entire organization. Users can also export them to Google Docs or Microsoft Word. Claude Slides and Claude Design will also be available inside conversations, both in beta.
- Users can ask Claude to create a presentation, edit individual slides, present directly from Claude or download the deck as a PowerPoint or PDF. Claude Design can create one-page visuals and graphics that can be edited and exported as images or PDFs.
The bottom line: Anthropic is turning Claude from a place to ask questions into a workspace for producing and revising the files that businesses run on. That may make AI tools more useful — and could further blur the boundary between an AI assistant and an office suite.
