What we know about the Putin ally who allegedly funded Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding

A Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin provided hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of funding for Donald Trump Jr.'s May wedding in the Bahamas, according to a ProPublica investigation.
Why it matters: Umar Kremlev's deep ties to Vladimir Putin allegedly created a personal financial link between President Trump's oldest child and prominent Russians while the U.S. attempts to broker peace with Ukraine.
The ProPublica report outlines how Kremlev allegedly paid to rent one of the private islands that hosted the celebration for Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson, as well as major costs including a fireworks show.
- The payments reportedly came from an entity in Dubai that's affiliated with the International Boxing Association, which is led by Kremlev.
- The relationship between Trump Jr. and Kremlev had not been previously reported.
What they're saying: "It's unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from," Anderson wrote in an Instagram post Monday morning. "Friendship doesn't require a political motive."
- A spokesperson for Trump Jr. did not dispute the payments from Kremlev and called him "a personal friend of Don" in a statement to ProPublica.
Zoom out: The Kremlev-led IBA sought to influence Trump shortly after his 2025 inauguration with an open letter seeking help in its fight with the International Olympic Committee, ProPublica reported.
- Trump Jr. appeared with Kremlev at a 2025 IBA event in Istanbul.
Kremlev's relationship with Putin
Kremlev, 43, developed ties with the Russian oligarchy in the early 2010s through his membership in the Night Wolves, a Russian motorcycle club that considers Putin an honorary member, the Washington Post reported.
- The leader of the Night Wolves introduced Kremlev to Alexei Rubezhnoi, who would go on to lead the Presidential Security Service for Putin, investigative outlet Proekt reported.
- In April of this year, Putin awarded Kremlev Russia's Order of Friendship at the Kremlin, per ProPublica.
- Ukrainian sanctions describe Kremlev as close to Putin.
His rise in boxing
In 2015, Kremlev founded a boxing promotion organization called Patriot and facilitated a meeting between Putin and former American star Roy Jones Jr. that led to Jones gaining Russian citizenship.
- Kremlev became the leader of the Russian Boxing Federation in 2017, with Rubezhnoi credited as having helped install him, Proekt reported.
- In late 2020, he was elected president of the IBA (then the AIBA).
Relationship between IBA and Gazprom
Shortly after Kremlev took the reins in 2021, the IBA formed a partnership with Gazprom, Russia's state-controlled energy giant. The financial arrangement helped the IBA get out of debt.
- Kremlev transformed the IBA into a more Russia-centric organization, transferring operations that had previously been in Switzerland and keeping Gazprom as its lone sponsor, the Washington Post reported.
- That relationship heightened the IOC's concerns about the boxing organization. The IBA was already suspended by the IOC when Kremlev took the helm and in 2023 recognition was permanently stripped.
