Stanley Druckenmiller makes AI writing a billionaire flex

Legendary investor Stanley Druckenmiller made AI writing seem like no big deal this week, telling NOTUS reporter Jeff Stein "of course" he used it to help draft a widely shared op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.
Why it matters: The moment could mark a real cultural shift where AI writing is basically all good, at least among a certain set of influential elites.
Where it stands: Among his intended audience in the financial world, Druckenmiller's article got more attention for its substance — a scathing critique of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent — than for its style.
- The writing is infused with the telltale cadences of the AI-generated one-two punch — for example, "If the 30-year must trade at 5.5% to clear, that isn't a crisis. It is an invoice."
- Or this familiar construct: "This wasn't liquidity management, it was price management ... "
State of play: Many folks on "fintwits," the finance community on X, formerly known as Twitter, not only seemed willing to overlook the method, but praised it:
- "Druck using AI to write the op ed is the sickest burn of 2026," Claudia Sahm, a former economist for the Federal Reserve posted. "Didn't even waste his time writing up why Bessent was wrong."
The big picture: The WSJ's opinions section threw open the floodgates to more AI-generated op-eds in its response to the discourse.
- "AI is a fact of modern life. People will use it to assist in their work and writing, including with research, checking grammar, editing and more," WSJ opinion editor Paul Gigot said in a statement.
- "The question for us is whether what we publish from contributors reflects an author's original argument, and if the author has the standing and credibility to make it."
- "In Stan Druckenmiller's case, we have had a relationship with him for many years, and nobody can doubt that his op-ed is his genuine opinion."
Worth noting: The WSJ newsroom, separate from Gigot's team, has a different policy on AI use.
Friction point: The reaction was very different to the response earlier this month when Harvard professor Ricardo Hausmann was criticized for using AI to write a column for the Financial Times.
- The paper ultimately appended a note at the top: "It has come to our attention that AI was used to condense a longer draft of this column prior to submission to the FT and our own editorial involvement."
- "The FT editorial code of conduct specifically prohibits the use of AI in the writing process."
Zoom in: Druckenmiller likened using AI to using a calculator.
- "There's a reason I moved from an English major to being an economics major," Druckenmiller told Stein. "I'm not embarrassed by it ... I write everything using AI now for the same reason I use a calculator when I do math problems."
Between the lines: For the most part, plenty of billionaires already employ ghostwriters to spin up their op-eds, LinkedIn musings and social media posts. Transitioning to AI seems like a natural progression.
Zoom out: For everyone else, it's not clear yet if they can get away with this. Druckenmiller's AI-gate comes in the context of a broader backlash to the intersection of AI and content.
- YouTuber Hank Green faced backlash after viewers of a video last month accused him of using AI to write his script. He later shared an policy on how he'll use the tech going forward.
- "Where do you draw the line of what's immoral and what is moral?" content creator and marketing strategist Sam Ogborn told Axios.
