Pinterest has hired digital media veteran David Brinker as global head of content, reporting to chief business officer Lee Brown, Axios has confirmed.
Why it matters: The move signals an evolution of Pinterest's strategy where the content on its platform becomes more aligned with business outcomes.
- Brinker previously led content partnerships that focus on monetization and go-to-market efforts for major tech platforms, such as Character.AI and Snap Inc. Before that, he was president of the New York Post.
Zoom in: In his new role, Brinker will lead a team that powers all of the content experiences across Pinterest, including visual search, discovery and shopping.
- He will oversee the platform's brand content partnerships and creator strategy, which includes building creator tools, programs and monetization opportunities, while also overseeing Pinterest's editorial and programming efforts.
- In a statement, Brown called Brinker "an operator with the rare mix of creative instinct and deep rigor" that will bring "clarity and momentum" as Pinterest evolves its content strategy and scales what's working.
Between the lines: Pinterest is investing more in cross-platform content and monetization opportunities as it looks to expand its creator partnerships.
- The company launched its first shoppable streaming series with creators, "Bring My Pinterest to Life," on The Roku Channel in March.
- In June, it added Amazon Storefront linking for eligible creators.
Zoom out: Brinker's hiring is part of a larger corporate evolution meant to unify the platform's content strategy with sales and monetization.
- When Brown was hired, Pinterest's then-chief content officer Malik Ducard was moved to the organization's business and revenue team. Ducard left Pinterest in July.
- The new positioning allows brands to connect with more relevant creators and content on the platform.
- "Content is at the core of Pinterest, and I'm excited to join and help scale an ecosystem that is both inspiring and positive, closing the gap between finding an idea and acting on it," Brinker said in a statement.
The big picture: Brinker is the latest in a slew of C-suite hires under CEO Bill Ready that are helping to reposition the brand as a global AI-driven shopping destination, primarily for Gen Z users.
- In June, the company announced it hired Snapchat's Julie Henderson to lead communications.
- It brought on longtime Amazon marketing executive Claudine Cheever as its new chief marketing officer in February, around the same time it hired Brown.
What to watch: Ready has moved aggressively to position Pinterest as a healthy alternative to social media platforms that focus on engagement over quality time spent, driving a surge in adoption among younger users.
- Today, more than half of Pinterest's overall user base is Gen Z.
- Last year, Ready became the first major tech executive to publicly advocate for phone-free schools.
