Apple's expanded Broadcom deal calls for 15 billion U.S.-made chips

Apple said Wednesday it expects to spend over $30 billion in its expanded partnership with Broadcom that will lead to more than 15 billion chips being made in the U.S.

Why it matters: It's the largest element to date in an Apple program designed to have more components made in the U.S., even as nearly all of its devices are made elsewhere.

Driving the news: The revised deal, which stretches through 2031, was first disclosed in a Broadcom regulatory filing earlier this week.

On Wednesday, the companies offered further details on the U.S. component of the deal, which includes a $1.5 billion expansion of Broadcom's chip plant in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Among the chips that will be made there are those for radio frequency and wireless connectivity, the companies said.

What they're saying: "The cutting-edge components built in Fort Collins are essential to delivering the incredible performance and connectivity our customers expect, and we're proud to deepen our investments in U.S.-based suppliers that share our commitment to excellence and innovation," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

"Broadcom is proud to continue to work with Apple after decades of success together, and we share a strong commitment to American innovation," Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said in a statement.
