Axel Springer, the German parent to Politico and Business Insider, on Friday announced a £575 million cash deal to acquire the Telegraph.
- The announcement scuttles a proposed offer for the conservative British broadsheet from Daily Mail and General Trust, which is owned by British billionaire Lord Rothermere.
Why it matters: The deal ends a long, drawn-out process to find the Telegraph a permanent home.
Catch up quick: The newspaper was purchased in 2023 by Redbird IMI, the joint venture between the American investment firm Redbird and Abu Dhabi-based International Media Investments.
- But RedBird IMI was blocked from taking over the asset amid a regulatory ban on foreign government ownership of newspapers in the U.K., prompting it to explore a sale of the Telegraph.
Zoom in: Axel Springer is the sole buyer of the newspaper.
- Recent reports suggested New York Sun owner Dovid Efune, as well as U.K. hedge fund manager Jeremy Hosking and U.S. broadcasting magnate David Smith, were also in talks to be part of the deal.
- Efune said in a statement, "Axel Springer will be an exemplary proprietor for this treasure of Western journalism. We're glad to have played a meaningful role in guiding this positive outcome and helping secure the long term future of the Telegraph."
- LionTree advised Axel Springer on the deal.
By the numbers: Axel Springer's £575 million all-cash offer ultimately trumped DMGT's £500 million offer struck in November.
What they're saying: "More than 20 years ago, we tried to acquire The Telegraph and did not succeed. Now our dream comes true," Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner said in a statement.
- Döpfner promised to preserve the newspaper's "distinctive character and legacy," and "to help it become the most read and intellectually inspiring center-right media outlet in the English-speaking world."
The other side: A spokesperson for DMGT said while the company had been optimistic about its plans for the paper, it wished "every success to Axel Springer and the Telegraph."
- "We have worked hard to complete the acquisition of the Telegraph and were confident that the organisation would have thrived under our long-term stewardship," the spokesperson added.
- "We believe that the protracted and out-of-date regulatory framework guarantees that UK-based national newspaper groups are at a huge competitive disadvantage in any merger process."
The big picture: Axel Springer has pushed to expand its footprint in the U.S. through strategic acquisitions and investments.
- Earlier this week, it announced a deal to acquire U.S. real estate publication Bisnow.
What's next: The company said it plans to "turbocharge" the expansion of the Telegraph in the U.S., leveraging the expertise of its American media brands.
- Redbird IMI said in a statement that its team is working closely with the U.K. government to obtain the necessary approvals to finalize the deal.
