Omnicom consolidates PR agencies following IPG merger

Omnicom has consolidated public relations agencies Porter Novelli with FleishmanHillard and Ketchum with Golin following its merger with IPG.
Why it matters: The restructuring underscores the accelerating consolidation across the agency world as it grapples with economic pressures, changing client expectations and AI disruption.
The big picture: Omnicom's PR consolidation comes after WPP combined BCW and Hill & Knowlton into Burson, creating one of the largest PR firms in the world.
- It also reflects the new role holding company-owned mega agencies will play in the AI and challenger firm era.
- Boutiques and midsize independent firms have gained momentum by offering more streamlined, agile and specialized advisory services.
- Meanwhile, AI is allowing in-house teams to do more, meaning they are relying less on agency support and some are even tapping into agency budgets to invest in AI tools.
Zoom in: Porter Novelli will fold into FleishmanHillard, with J.J. Carter at the helm as global CEO and Jillian Janaczek as Americas CEO.
- Golin and Ketchum will merge and Matt Neale will serve as CEO and Tamara Norman as global president.
- PR agency Weber Shandwick and digital marketing agency MMC will not change at this time, per an internal memo reviewed by Axios.
- The public affairs firms under the Omnicom PR umbrella — DDC Public Affairs, GMMB, FP1 Strategies, Mercury Public Affairs, PLUS Communications, Portland Communications and VOX Global — will also not be impacted by this restructuring.
What to watch: Omnicom cut 4,000 jobs after consolidating several of its ad agencies. More cuts will likely follow these PR agency restructurings.
- Talent uncertainty during consolidations can also create recruitment opportunities for challenger firms.
What they're saying: "No broad-based staffing changes are being announced today," a representative for Omnicom told Axios.
- "We're focused on client delivery and a thoughtful transition, with the intent to minimize disruption. If changes are needed as we work through the transition, we'll address them directly with the people involved."


Between the lines: The restructuring must also prove to investors that the merger will translate into stronger profits, not just a larger footprint.
What's next: Omnicom was originally scheduled to report earnings on Tuesday but has pushed the call to a later date, which has not yet been announced.
