MDC Brooklyn is a co-ed facility in New York City that houses roughly 1,300 people, according to the center's website.

• It's the only federal facility in the city, as the local government operates the infamous Rikers Island prison complex.
• New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani slammed the Trump administration for the operation in a post on X Saturday afternoon, and said that he was "briefed" on the couple's "planned imprisonment in federal custody" in the city.

People held at MDC have claimed the conditions are dangerous and inhumane, and have caused multiple detainee deaths over the years.

• Federal judges have called the center "barbaric" and "inhumane," and sometimes even reduce detainees' sentences to account for the rough conditions people have to endure pre-trial.
• People held at MDC have reportedly complained of maggot-infested food, constant lockdowns, and medical mistreatment, according to State Senator Andrew Gounardes.

Gounardes also called the center "chronically-understaffed," and local newspapers have reported that the staff that is present is "contemptuous of human life and dignity."

• Per the DOJ, in one instance of staff violence, a corrections officer pepper-sprayed a person having a mental health crisis, placed them in hand and leg restraints after being sprayed, and the person was later pronounced dead.

Who are MDC Brooklyn's famous tenants?

Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell was held in the center previously, although the Trump administration transferred her to a cushy, minimum-security prison back in August.
