Micron to exit consumer memory business amid data center boom

Memory giant Micron is shuttering its nearly three-decade-old consumer business saying on Wednesday it would rather focus on selling its memory and storage products to AI companies.

Why it matters: It's the latest sign of company pivoting to take advantage of the AI boom, but could also lead to even higher prices for consumers who want to upgrade their computers.

What they're saying: "The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage," Micron chief business officer Sumit Sadana said in a statement. "Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments."

Micron said it will continue shipping its Crucial-branded consumer products through February and provide ongoing warranty service and support.

The big picture: Memory prices — typically a cyclical business — have been surging amid booming data center demand.

Samsung, another key player in the memory chip business, hiked prices last month by as much as 60%, Reuters reported.
