The next anti-Trump protest hitting Washington, D.C., will demand the president's impeachment and removal against a backdrop of live music and standup comedy.
Why it matters: This latest protest comes during a record-setting year for U.S. demonstrations amid growing discontent throughout the administration.
- Last month, more than 7 million people participated in "No Kings" protests weeks into what would become a record-breaking government shutdown.
State of play: Unlike other nationwide protests, "Remove the Regime" is focused on events in Trump's backyard in D.C.
- The events kick off on Thursday with a rally, followed by what organizers say will be "record-breaking direct lobbying for impeachment and removal." Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) will participate in a march to Congress. His office did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
- On Friday, organizers will host a training on how to lobby, a veterans' rally and a comedy night with political standup.
- The main event is a rally at the Lincoln Memorial at noon Saturday. The Dropkick Murphys and Earth to Eve will perform during the day.
- That night, Earth to Eve will perform again along with Gwen Levey and the Breakdown, Allstrike and Freedom Futures Collective for a ticketed fundraiser.
What they're saying: "We will have fun, but this is not for fun," the protest's website said. "We intend to change the trajectory in this country and the conversation around the world."
- "We can only do this if we show up in numbers that are too big to ignore."
- Organizers did not immediately respond to Axios' request for how many people they were expecting to protest.
- White House spokesperson Liz Huston claimed in an emailed statement Wednesday that the protests are "left-wing dark money-funded," adding that the rallies cannot undo his election.
Zoom in: The Removal Coalition includes nearly two dozen organizations, including 50501, Citizens' Impeachment, Gaslit Nation, Flare and Remember Your Oath.
- "Mitigating the sabotage of American democracy is not sufficient," they wrote.
- "The Removal Coalition exists to elevate the removal demand of the protest and direct action space, compel media coverage of this objective, translate that pressure to lawmakers, empower activists to be explicit about demanding impeachment and removal, and amplify organizations committed to this constitutional imperative."
