Trump's lone remaining criminal case gets new prosecutor

• "The public has a legitimate interest in the outcome of this case," Peter Skandalakis, the director of the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia wrote.

Driving the news: Friday marked the deadline set by Judge Scott McAfee to appoint a prosecutor or risk dismissal of the case.

• Skandalakis took on the case after several prosecutors declined the offer to assume responsibility. He did not disclose their identities or reasons for turning it down.

Zoom in: "The decision to assume responsibility for this matter was reached only after careful and deliberate consideration," Skandalakis wrote.

• "While it would have been simple to allow Judge McAfee's deadline to lapse or to inform the Court that no conflict prosecutor could be secured — thereby allowing the case to be dismissed for want of prosecution — I did not believe that to be the right course of action."

The other side: "This politically charged prosecution has to come to an end," Steve Sadow, Trump's lead Georgia defense counsel, said.

• "We remain confident that a fair and impartial review will lead to a dismissal of the case against President Trump."

Context: A grand jury indicted Trump and 18 others in 2023 for their alleged efforts to flip Georgia's 2020 election results.

• The Georgia case was narrowed last year by a judge who dismissed three criminal counts, two of which applied to Trump.
• Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was disqualified from the case last year after she was accused of impropriety due to a relationship with a lead prosecutor on the case.

What's next: McAfee set a Dec. 1 meeting to discuss the status of the case.
