North Carolina homes collapse as dual hurricanes bring strong winds, waves

• The erosion is also contributing to the loss of habitats for shorebirds and sea turtles along the Seashore, the National Park Service warns.

Zoom in: The six houses washed away from Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Sept. 30, and the park service warned "further collapses are possible due to the ocean conditions."

• Officials are currently not aware of any injuries from the collapsed houses.

Threat level: Imelda is expected to cause "dangerous marine conditions and rip currents" along the East Coast during the next several days, according to a public advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

• The storm will bring hurricane-force winds to Bermuda on Wednesday evening, swiping the North Atlantic island just one day after Humberto caused flash flooding and damaging waves.
• Bermuda is roughly 650 miles east of North Carolina's coast, but there is a high rip current threat from the tip of Florida all the way up to Maine.

What we're watching: The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually uneventful so far, but there was a similar lull in 2024 before the devastating dual landfalls of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

• Forecasters expect approximately 13-18 named storms, including 2-5 major hurricanes this year, according to NOAA's updated predictions from early August.
• The season officially concludes on Nov. 30.
