Scoop: McConnell preps rules change on Senate funds for security

Senate Rules Chair Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told senators in a closed-door lunch on Tuesday that his committee is drafting a fix that would allow senators to use official funds for security expenses, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: The rules change resolution will need to pass the full Senate to go into effect. Security fears have rippled through Congress following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

McConnell indicated that the resolution would be ready to go soon, but an exact timeline for a vote was not clear, according to sources familiar with what was said in the meeting.

The big picture: The House is adding $88 million for additional security for all three branches of the federal government as part of their stop-gap spending package to avert a government shutdown.

Senate Republicans received an update on security from the Senate sergeant-at-arms and the chief of the Capitol Police on Tuesday, as Axios first reported.
