Lyft and May Mobility pilot robotaxi service in Atlanta

Lyft is adding autonomous robotaxis to its fleet in Atlanta starting today, part of a pilot with AV developer May Mobility.

Why it matters: It's the first of several autonomous services Lyft plans to launch as it tries to catch up to Uber, which already offers Waymo driverless taxis in Atlanta, Austin and Phoenix.

A small number of Toyota Sienna minivans equipped with May Mobility's autonomous technology will operate in a seven-square mile radius in Midtown Atlanta during daylight hours.
Each vehicle will have a human operator in the driver's seat to help acclimate customers to the experience and to take control of the vehicle if necessary, the companies said.
They did not provide a timeline for when the vehicles would be fully driverless.
Fares will be similar to human-driven Lyfts.

The big picture: Lyft is playing catch up to Uber, which has more than a dozen partner agreements globally.

Lyft is expected to offer autonomous rides in more U.S. markets as early as next year with its other partners, including Mobileye and Austria's Benteler Group.
Lyft also has a deal with China's Baidu Inc. to offer driverless rides in Europe.
