Apple on Tuesday unveiled the iPhone 17 family of smartphones and a thinner iPhone Air model, along with new Apple Watches and an updated set of AirPods headphones.
Why it matters: Apple faces tremendous pressure to deliver a hit new device as the company lags behind competitors in the AI race.
iPhone Air
- A new entrant to the iPhone lineup — the titanium-encased iPhone Air —features a 6.5-inch display along with a new A19 Pro processor and is the company's thinnest smartphone to date. The iPhone Air starts at $999 and, as is the case for the iPhone 17 models, will be available on Sept. 19.
- Apple said it was able to maintain "all-day" battery life by moving components near the phone's lone 48-megapixel camera and by removing the SIM card.
- "iPhone Air is unlike anything you've experienced before," CEO Tim Cook said during the live-streamed event.
iPhone 17 Pro
- The 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro has three rear cameras, like prior models, though Apple has widened the "bump" on the back to stretch across the phone's width, which Apple says makes room for a bigger battery.
- All three rear cameras have a 48-megapixel resolution, with the zoom range stretching to 8x, the most Apple has included.
- Like the iPhone Air, the iPhone 17 Pro is powered by Apple's A19 Pro processor. Unlike that model, Apple opted for an aluminum case. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 and comes with 256 gigabytes of memory.
- That makes it $100 more than last year's cheapest pro model, though that version came with 128GB of memory, with the 256GB version costing the same $1,099.
- As in past years, there's also a larger-screen Pro Max model, with this year's model starting at $1,199 and boasting a 6.9-inch display.
iPhone 17
- The entry-level iPhone 17 model starts at $799 and has a 6.3-inch display, a new A19 processor and improved battery life along with an improved front-facing camera with a wider field of view and updates to the two cameras on the rear of the phone.
- All the new models run iOS 26, which will also be available as a free update for older phones starting on Sept. 15.
Apple Watch
- Apple said the Apple Watch Series 11, which starts at $399, is the company's thinnest watch to date, has 24-hour battery life and also packs new health features to rate sleep and detect high blood pressure. The cellular model will support 5G wireless networks, a first for Apple.
- At the high end, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 offers the company's largest-ever watch display, along with a faster refresh rate and up to 42 hours of battery life. That model starts at $799.
- There's also an updated version of the entry level model, the $249 Apple Watch SE 3, which gets an improved processor, always-on display and other features previously reserved for higher-end models.
- All three models will be available starting Sept. 19.
AirPods Pro 3
- Apple promised the new earbuds will have longer battery life, an improved fit, sweat and water resistance.
- On the software front, the new AirPods are capable of live language translation and better noise cancellation.
- The $249 AirPods Pro 3 will be available for pre-order starting Sept. 9 and broadly available on Sept. 19.
