DHS offers to pay police salaries for help with Trump's immigration efforts

• The funding will come through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, per DHS.

State of play: Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act allows ICE to delegate authority to local police to enforce some immigration laws

• Homeland Security would offer local police tools and training to enforce immigration laws while performing routine police duties.
• Starting Oct. 1, ICE will fully reimburse participating agencies for the annual salary and benefits of each eligible trained officer, including overtime coverage up to 25% of the officer's annual salary.
• Law enforcement agencies will also be eligible for quarterly monetary performance awards based on the successful location of undocumented immigrants provided by ICE.

By the numbers: As of Tuesday, state and local police from 40 states have participated, with 8,501 trained task force officers and over 2,000 officers in training, Homeland Security said.

• 287(g) partnerships have increased 609% under Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — from 135 agreements to 958.

Zoom in: Under the agreement, police forces that locate 90% to 100% of undocumented immigrants identified by ICE will receive $1,000 per eligible task force officer.

• 80% to 89% will earn $750 per officer; and 70% to 79% will yield $500 per eligible officer.
