Hegseth authorizes National Guard to carry arms in D.C.

What they're saying: A Defense official confirmed to Axios that the National Guard members who are on mission to lower crimes in D.C. will be carrying their "service-issued weapons, consistent with their mission and training."

• The interim commanding general of the D.C. National Guard retains the authority to make any necessary force posture adjustments in coordination with the D.C. Metropolitan Police and Federal law enforcement partners.
• Asked if there will be ammunition provided to the National Guard, the official declined to comment further.
• D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office declined to comment.

By the numbers: After Trump activated about 800 D.C. National Guard soldiers, governors from the red states also approved additional deployment of National Guard troops from their own states.

• South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster authorized the deployment of 200 guard personnel from his state to support federal law enforcement activities, according to a statement.

• Some 300 to 400 West Virginia Guard personnel will also be deployed to the District at the administration's request, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced.
• Those troops will also be joined by 150 military police from the Ohio National Guard as well as 200 troops from Mississippi, 160 from Tennessee and 135 from Louisiana.
