Trump administration faces first lawsuit to force release of Epstein files

A democracy-focused legal nonprofit sued the Trump administration on Friday for not releasing Jeffrey Epstein-related documents and requested them in an expedited manner.

Why it matters: The organization, Democracy Forward, said the lawsuit is the first challenging the administration's handling of the Epstein files.

Democracy Forward asked the court to order the government to produce requested records. The lawsuit said the Justice Department and FBI have violated the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
The Trump administration did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

Context: Democracy Forward submitted several FOIA requests seeking Epstein-related documents on July 25.

"Though the government acknowledged receipt of the original request, the appeal for urgency was ignored," a statement said. "Today's lawsuit seeks to force the government to treat the matter with the importance it demands."
The request was for senior administration officials' communications regarding the Epstein probe, including regarding correspondence between Trump and Epstein, and records concerning agency review of the matter.
