Trump administration tries to oust the University of Virginia's president

Driving the news: "UVA decided to rebrand DEI and negotiated in bad faith," a source familiar with the administration's position told Axios. "The temperature has risen."

• University spokesperson Brian Coy told Axios: "UVA is committed to complying with all federal laws and has been cooperating with the Department of Justice in the ongoing inquiries. The federal government's support of the University is essential to continue the core mission of research, education and clinical care."
• The Justice Department privately demanded Ryan resign to resolve an investigation into the school's DEI policies, the New York Times first reported.

State of play: The Trump administration has targeted billions of dollars in funding for elite institutions including Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Brown and Princeton.

Zoom out: UVA was ordered to scrap two key diversity goals following a 2020 task force plan, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

• Ryan was under intensifying pressure from board members and others to ensure DEI was completely abolished at UVA — which the the DOJ demanded proof of by the end of May.
