Top Senate Republicans demand answers from Trump

• Trump's aggressive efforts to slash government spending using executive power and the ongoing Signal group chat scandal have sparked serious concern among some GOP lawmakers.

Zoom in: Senate Armed Services Chair Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and ranking member Jack Reed (D-R.I.) asked the Pentagon's inspector general to investigate how The Atlantic's editor-in-chief Jeffery Goldberg ended up in a group chat in which details of a military attack on the Houthis was shared.

• The senators specifically asked the IG to assess "whether any individuals transferred classified information" — something the White House and top officials have claimed did not happen.
• Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins (R-Maine) and ranking member Patty Murray (D-Wash.) in a letter suggested Russell Vought is breaking the law by refusing to disseminate funds appropriated by Congress.

What they're saying: Collins and Murray argued, "It is incumbent on all of us to follow the law as written — not as we would like it to be."

• "We are concerned that sudden changes to OMB's interpretation of long-standing statutory provisions could be disruptive to the appropriations process and make it more difficult," the senators said.
