Trump says tariffs are negotiating tool for TikTok sale

What he's saying: "Maybe I'll give them a little reduction in tariffs or something to get it done," Trump told reporters from the Oval Office.

• "Because every point in tariffs is worth more money than TikTok."

Catch up quick: Congress last year passed a law requiring China's ByteDance to divest most of its stake in TikTok, due to national security concerns, or else the app would be banned in the U.S.

• Trump gave ByteDance a 75-day extension upon taking office, even though the law didn't give him authority to do so.
• That extension is set to expire on April 5.
• At least four different investment groups have made offers to buy TikTok, negotiating primarily with Vice President Vance's office. TikTok's technology partner Oracle also has been involved in divestiture talks, as have U.S. venture capital firms with existing ByteDance stakes.
• It is generally believed that ByteDance would need Chinese government approval to sell.
