NYC Mayor Eric Adams sues Trump admin for $80 million in asylum seeker funds

• Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove requested the charges be dismissed without prejudice.
• A federal judge indefinitely paused the trial on Friday.

What they're saying: City comptroller Brad Lander said in a statement Friday his office had to pressure Adams to allow the suit.

• "After my office discovered that Elon Musk and his DOGE goon squad stole $80 million out of the City's coffers, we successfully pressured Mayor Adams to allow the City's lawyers to sue the federal government to get our money back," the comptroller said.
• "The lawyers who are standing up to President Trump and Eric Adams' collusion deserve praise and we look forward to Donald Trump returning the money he stole from New York."

Zoom in: Adams said in a statement Friday, the city has managed an "unprecendented crisis," seeing more than 231,000 people arrive in search of shelter.

• "Without a doubt, our immigration system is broken, but the cost of managing an international humanitarian crisis should not overwhelmingly fall onto one city alone," Adams said.

• The mayor later said the Federal Emergency Management Agency "approved, paid, then rescinded" $80 million after the city spent more than $7 billion over three years.
• He said FEMA's funding is "the bare minimum our taxpayers deserve."

White House and DOGE representatives did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
