JCPenney confirmed to Axios that it is closing more stores this year in a move "unrelated to the recent Catalyst Brands merger."
Why it matters: Approximately 15,000 store closures are expected this year, more than double the 7,325 stores that closed in 2024, according to Coresight Research.
- Big Lots, Party City, Kohl's and Macy's are among the retailers currently holding liquidation sales.
The big picture: JCPenney's current closing list has eight locations, which represents less than 2% of its 650-plus locations.
- "While we do not have plans to significantly reduce our store count, we expect a handful of JCPenney stores to close by mid-year," a company spokesperson said in a statement to Axios.
What they're saying: "The decision to close a store is never an easy one, but isolated closures do happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors," the spokesperson said.
Flashback: Texas-based JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020 and has closed around 200 locations in bankruptcy.
- It emerged from bankruptcy after being acquired by mall owners Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management Inc.
- This January, JCPenney and retail store operator Sparc announced they were merging to form a U.S. retailing behemoth Catalyst Brands, Axios' Richard Collings reports.
