Bill to add Trump to Mount Rushmore introduced in House

Driving the news: The bill was introduced by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), who said on X that Trump's "remarkable accomplishments for our country and the success he will continue to deliver deserve the highest recognition and honor on this iconic national monument."

Flashback: It's not the first time the idea of adding a president to the historic South Dakota hills has been floated.

• In 1999, Congress debated and ultimately rejected adding President Ronald Reagan to the quartet of former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Zoom out: The Mount Rushmore bill echoes another House proposal introduced last week to change the Constitution to allow Trump to seek a third and final term in office.

• The measure would allow any president who didn't serve two consecutive terms to run for a third. Only Trump and Grover Cleveland have ever served non-consecutive terms in the White House.
• That proposal is also an extreme long-shot: It would need a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress and be ratified by 38 states to be added to the Constitution.
