JD Vance resigns from Senate, effective Friday

Vice President-elect JD Vance resigned from the U.S. Senate, effective midnight on Friday — just over a week from Inauguration Day.

Why it matters: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) is expected to swiftly appoint Vance's replacement, who will join a GOP-led Congress.

"It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate over the past two years," Vance wrote in the Thursday letter to DeWine.

What's next: DeWine's appointee will serve until November 2026, when a special election will be held to determine who will finish the term.

State of play: Vance will be Ohio's first vice president when he takes office this month.

"To the people of Ohio, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate," Vance said in a Thursday statement.
"When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I've made sure to live by that promise every single day."
