Former President Carter's remains were transported Tuesday from Georgia to Washington D.C., where he'll be taken to the U.S. Navy Memorial before a procession to the Capitol.
The big picture: Carter, who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100, will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda until his state funeral Thursday.
- Thursday will mark a national day of mourning for the nation's 39th president. U.S. flags will fly at half-staff on all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels for 30 days.
Zoom in: Congress will hold a service to pay its respects Tuesday afternoon.
- Carter will then lie in state, with a public viewing from Tuesday evening until Thursday morning.
- After the state funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, the Carter family will travel back to Georgia for a private funeral service.
