Top CoinDesk editors let go in restructuring, sources say

The latest: The three editors let go, according to two newsroom sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, were Nick Baker and Marc Hochstein, both deputy editors in chief, and Kevin Reynolds, the editor in chief.

Zoom out: Fortune previously reported there had recently been controversy over CoinDesk's coverage of entrepreneur Justin Sun, the founder of the Tron blockchain.

• Sun had purchased "Comedian," by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, for $6.2 million. It's the conceptual artwork of a banana taped to a wall.
• He invited reporters to see him eat the banana in Hong Kong. A CoinDesk reporter covered the event in late November with what might be called a mild amount of sarcasm.
• The article can no longer be found on CoinDesk's site, but it still exists on Yahoo Finance, where it was republished (archived version).

Fortune reported that CoinDesk's new owner, Bullish, requested that the article be removed after Tron complained to the company.

• CoinDesk and Bullish have not replied to a request for comment from Axios.

In the weeds: Bullish purchased CoinDesk in late 2023, amidst turmoil at its prior owner, the Digital Currency Group.

Bullish was created by Block.One, a company best known for launching the EOS blockchain, though EOS is no longer in the top 100 blockchains by market cap.
