House Republicans swarm race for Elise Stefanik's leadership job

A slew of GOP lawmakers are making moves to become the next House Republican conference chair in the wake of President-elect Trump tapping Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to serve as his ambassador to the United Nations.

Why it matters: With the top three roles within the House GOP conference currently uncontested, the No. 4 spot in leadership is expected to be the most crowded race for a leadership position.

House GOP Conference Secretary Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) and Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) and Rep. Erin Houchin (R-Ind.) have officially thrown their hat in the ring for the position.
Vice Chairman Blake Moore (R-Utah) has also been making calls, sources confirmed to Axios.

Zoom in: The last three conference chairs have been women. But if Moore makes it official, his experience as vice chair could help him in the race.

Lawmakers in Florida and Texas have previously said that they feel their states should have more representation at the leadership table.

The big picture: Lawmakers are required to inform Stefanik and her team if they plan to seek an elected leadership position by Tuesday at noon ET, with internal leadership elections scheduled for Wednesday.
