"Brat" is Collins Dictionary's 2024 word of the year

• The term is defined by Collins as an adjective "characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude."
• "More than a hugely successful album, 'brat' is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and 'brat summer' established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life," the dictionary stated in its announcement.

The big picture: "Brat" became not only a summer rallying call with the phrase "brat summer," but also a political one.

• "Kamala IS brat," Charli XCX posted on X just hours after Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed Vice President Harris to be the party's nominee.
• The Harris campaign then embraced the lime-hued aesthetic of the "Brat" album in its green background photo featuring the words "Kamala HQ."

Zoom out: Another word shortlisted by Collins Dictionary includes "era" — a nod to Taylor Swift's Eras tour, the highest-grossing tour of all time.

• Other words on the list include brainrot, rawdogging, delulu and yapping — all of which are terms the kids are using these days on social media.
