Scoop: Jonathan Lemire to be named a "Morning Joe" co-host

Jonathan Lemire — host of "Way Too Early," at 5am ET on MSNBC — will be promoted in January to co-host of the "Morning Joe" 9am hour, the show's marquee hour for the West Coast, an NBC News source tells Axios.

A new 5am host will be named later. Lemire is the rare cable news anchor who signed a new deal without a pay cut.

Why it matters: Co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are continuing to bolster the "Morning Joe" franchise, which includes "Way Too Early" — giving them control of an astonishing 25 hours of live MSNBC programming each week, plus highlights shows on Saturday and Sunday.

Zoom in: Lemire, 44, is a homegrown "Joe" talent now elevated to a co-host of the influential show.

His Red Sox obsession gives him plenty to banter about with Scarborough and co-host Willie Geist — along with Liverpool soccer, "Star Wars," presidential biographies and table tennis.
In Lemire's day job, he is White House bureau chief for Politico.

Zoom out: The show's 9am hour, which launched in 2022, has exceeded expectations for viewers and revenue, the source said.
