Mississippi law allowing postmarked ballots after Election Day ruled invalid

• The decision, a win for the Republican National Committee that sued over the issue in January, could have trickle-down effects in states with similar laws, The Washington Post reported.

Zoom out: Nevada, a swing state, allows mail-in ballots postmarked on or before Election Day to be received by 5pm the fourth day after Election Day, according to Clark County.

• Mississippi statute allows for ballots to arrive up to five days after Election Day.
• Similar allowances are in place in more than a dozen states and Washington D.C., according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

What they're saying: The three-person panel deciding the Mississippi appeal was composed of Trump-appointed judges Andrew Oldham, James Ho and Kyle Duncan.

• "Congress statutorily designated a singular 'day for the election' of members of Congress and the appointment of presidential electors," Oldham wrote on behalf of the panel.
• "Text, precedent, and historical practice confirm this 'day for the election' is the day by which ballots must be both cast by voters and received by state officials."
