Former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney endorses Democrat Susan Wild

• The endorsement was first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

What she's saying: "Susan and I served together in the House, and while we may not agree on everything, I know that she holds a deep respect for the integrity of our democracy," Cheney said in a statement.

• "This election we must look beyond partisanship to ensure we defeat election deniers and support people like Susan, who are serious leaders, and will do what's right for their district and our nation."
• Wild said in a statement that she has "always said that I will work with anyone, regardless of party, if it advances the interests of my beloved community."

Zoom out: Once a staunchly conservative ally of Trump, Liz Cheney broke decisively with the then-president in 2021 over the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

• She was ousted as conference chair for her criticism of Trump, later serving as vice chair of the Jan. 6 committee before losing her primary to a Trump-backed challenger.
• Cheney endorsed several House Democrats facing conservative challengers in 2022, including Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.).

• She has also endorsed John Avlon, who is running against Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) this cycle.

State of play: Wild, the ranking member on the House Ethics Committee, is in one of the most contested battleground districts of the 2024 election cycle.

• Pennsylvania's 7th district, which covers much of the state's Lehigh Valley, voted for President Biden by less than a percentage point in 2020.
• Wild is facing Republican state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in the Nov. 5 general election. Mackenzie's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
