Women's marathon world record shattered in Chicago

Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich completed Sunday's Chicago Marathon with a world record-breaking time of 2:09:56.

Why it matters: She crossed the finish line in Grant Park nearly two full minutes faster than the previous record time, set by Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia last year in Berlin.

The big picture: This is the third time Chepngetich, 30, has broken the tape in Chicago, but the former world champion's previous personal best in the marathon was 2:14:18.

She also set a world record in the half marathon in 2021 in Istanbul, though her time was bested later that year.
Kenyans now hold the marathon world records for both men and women. Kelvin Kiptum set the men's mark last year in Chicago, running 2:00:35.
