Hyundai to make SUV with Waymo self-driving car tech

The companies on Friday announced what they jointly called a "multi-year, strategic partnership."

Zoom in: The first phase of the collaboration will involve the integration of Waymo's sixth-generation fully autonomous system into the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric SUV.

• They said Hyundai will manufacture the vehicles "in significant volume" at its EV plant in Georgia.
• On-road testing is expected to begin in late 2025 with vehicles to become available to Waymo One ride-hailing app users "in the years to follow," Hyundai said.

How it works: Hyundai will modify the Ioniq 5 to incorporate power doors and certain redundant hardware.

• Waymo, part of Google owner Alphabet, has developed a self-driving car that uses 13 cameras, four lidar systems, six radar systems and external audio receivers.

• Waymo and Uber announced in September that they will expand Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing service for use on Uber's app in Atlanta and Austin, Texas, in early 2025.
• Waymo One is already available in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles and provides more than 100,000 trips weekly.
