Trump says he's meeting with Zelensky Friday

Former President Trump said Thursday that he is meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, one day after Vice President Harris met with the Ukrainian president.

Why it matters: Trump's announcement — during a press conference at Trump Tower in New York — also comes one day after the former president accused Zelensky of making "little, nasty aspersions" toward him.

Driving the news: "It's a shame what's happening in Ukraine, so many deaths, so much destruction. It's a horrible thing," Trump said.

Trump said he will be meeting with Zelensky at Trump Tower at around 9:45am.

The big picture: Tensions between Trump and his allies and Zelensky grew this week, after Zelensky told the New Yorker that Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Trump's running mate, is "too radical" in his opposition to U.S. aid to Ukraine and that Trump doesn't know how to end the war with Russia.

Trump on Wednesday criticized Zelensky and said he "refuses to make a deal."
Zelensky also met with President Biden on Thursday.
