Man charged for threatening to torture and kill 6 Supreme Court justices

• He was charged with nine counts of making threats against a federal judge and 13 counts of making threats in interstate commerce.
• The indictment does not name which of the six justices were threatened. The court is split 6-3 between conservatives and liberals.

Zoom in: Starting in March 2023, Anastasiou allegedly sent more than 465 messages to the Supreme Court through a public website the court maintains.

• The messages contained threats and violent, racist and homophobic rhetoric, per the indictment.
• Some of the threats were intended to intimidate the six justices and retaliate against them for actions they had taken in their official capacity as federal judges, the court document states.

What they're saying: "We allege that the defendant made repeated, heinous threats to murder and torture Supreme Court justices and their families to retaliate against them for decisions he disagreed with," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

• "Our justice system depends on the ability of judges to make their decisions based on the law, and not on fear," he added.
• The Supreme Court did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.
