Trump recounts apparent assassination attempt: "All of a sudden we heard shots"

What he's saying: "All of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air, and I guess probably four or five, and it sounded like bullets," Trump said during Monday's event that was advertised before Sunday's incident as being about crypto venture World Liberty Financial, which the GOP nominee and his family are involved in.

• Trump noted that the gunfire he had heard "actually, interestingly, was a Secret Service agent had seen a barrel of an AK-47," and "he started shooting at the barrel, started shooting in the bushes" and "ran toward the target, and was shooting a lot ... those were the shots we heard."
• Trump noted that the suspect "never got a shot off, and he ran across the street and grabbed his car, hopped into his truck or car, and amazingly, a civilian in that area saw something that looked very suspicious ... and took pictures of the license plate, gave him to the sheriff's office."

Zoom out: Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe said earlier Monday that the suspect did not have a line of sight to Trump and "did not fire or get off any shots at our agents."
