Houthis launch long-range missile attack against Israel

• Yahya Saree, a Houthis spokesperson, said the group launched "a new hypersonic missile" towards a target in Jaffa, near Tel Aviv.
• The IDF's missile defense system didn't intercept the missile before it entered Israel's airspace and said the missile "exploded" in the air, scattering debris in open areas.
• The IDF said fragments of air defense missiles launched to intercept the missile fell near a rail station and that a fire started near the Ben Gurion Airport.
• No injuries were reported as a result of the attack, but the IDF said nine people were injured while moving to shelters after alarms sounded.
• This is the longest-range missile to ever hit Israel.

The latest: An IDF official said in a briefing with reporters that Israel began monitoring the Houthi missile shortly after it was launched.

• Once in Israeli airspace, one of the interceptor missiles detonated near the Houthi missile but didn't destroy it, the official said.
• The IDF official said the Houthi missile was not a hypersonic missile, as Saree claimed.

Driving the news: The Houthis have been threatening to retaliate for Israel's strike on Hodeidah, Yemen's fourth-largest city.

• On Saturday, a Houthi official said that in the coming days, Israel is going to encounter "surprises" it doesn't expect.
• In a separate statement shared on Telegram after Sunday's launch, the Houthis said Israel should expect more attacks ahead of the one-year anniversary of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

The other side: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Houthis "should know that we exact a high price for any attempt to attack us."

• "Whoever needs a reminder of this, is invited to visit the port of Hodeidah," Netanyahu said.

Flashback: The Houthis, an Islamist militant group backed by Iran, have harassed and attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea for months in what they say is a response to Israel's war in Gaza.

• Last July, the Houthis conducted a drone attack on Tel Aviv which killed one Israeli civilian and wounded several others.
• In response, Israeli fighter jets conducted an air strike on the port of Hodeida.
