Scoop: Sanders backs Schumer on dropping filibuster for abortion rights

• A move to bypass the filibuster would be the most ambitious plan from a Democratic leader to enshrine abortion rights into federal law.

Driving the news: Sanders told us he would "absolutely" support a filibuster carve-out next year to codify abortion rights after the fall of Roe v. Wade.

• "On voting rights, on reproductive rights, the American people are very clear they want to maintain an American democracy," Sanders said. "I think the majority should rule."
• Schumer told reporters at the Democratic National Convention last month that he was considering using the filibuster carve-out to pass abortion rights, which means he would only need a simple majority.

• Schumer tried to construct a filibuster carve-out for voting rights in 2022, which Sanders supported. The plan crumbled when Sens. Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) withheld their support.
