Zoom out: As Trump has wrestled with how to attack Harris without turning off voters, some Republicans have urged him to stay away from attacking her racial identity, appearance, and intelligence.

• Trump has even struggled to pick one of his famous nicknames for Harris, having tried out "Laffin' Kamala Harris," "Kamabla," and "Comrade Kamala."
• In private Trump is more succinct, reportedly calling Harris a "bitch."
