August's Blue Moon doesn't appear blue, but it is lighting up the sky around the world this week.
The big picture: Photos captured Monday night show the supermoon, which looks 14% larger than typical full Moons.
Context: NASA said it is possible for the Moon to appear blue on rare occasions but that is not expected for this week's Full Moon.
- It can appear blue when tiny particles, typically smoke or dust, "scatter away red wavelengths of light," NASA said.
What time is the Blue Moon visible?
The Moon should be highest in the sky in the east around Monday evening around midnight, EarthSky News reports.
- You can also look in the west before sunrise on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
Zoom in: The Moon will appear full for three days through early Wednesday morning, NASA said.
