JD Vance agrees to debate Tim Walz on Oct. 1

Driving the news: Vance also said that he accepted an invite from CNN for a VP debate on Sept. 18.

• The Harris campaign responded in a statement that "the debate about debates is over" and indicated that there will only be one VP debate.
• "Donald Trump's campaign accepted our proposal for three debates — two presidential and a vice presidential debate," Harris-Walz communications director Michael Tyler said.
• Having multiple VP debates would have been unprecedented. In each of the past 10 presidential cycles, the running mates have debated a single time.

What he's saying: "The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already," Vance wrote on X.

• "Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!"

The big picture: Walz said Wednesday that accepted the invite from CBS News for the Oct. 1 debate. The network said that it offered the candidates four possible dates: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 8.

• Former President Trump and Vice President Harris have agreed to a presidential debate on Sept. 10 set to be hosted by ABC News. Plans for additional debates have yet to be finalized.
