U.S. women's soccer defeats Brazil to win gold at Paris Olympics

The U.S. women's soccer team defeated Brazil 1-0 on Saturday to capture the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Why it matters: The popular and sometimes dominant team has struggled in recent international tournaments since winning the women's World Cup in 2019.

Mallory Swanson scored in the 57th minute, with an assist from Korbin Albert, to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the first half, despite plenty of chances for both sides. Brazil briefly appeared to have taken an early lead in the 16th minute, but the flag went up for offsides.

Between the lines: The game marked the likely Olympic finale for legendary Brazilian forward Marta Vieira da Silva, who will be 42 by the time the 2028 Games come to Los Angeles.

She was a reserve for the match, but entered in the 61st minute, shortly after the U.S. goal.
Both squads had loud contingents of fans making their feelings heard throughout the match with alternating changes of "U-S-A" and "Bra-zil."
